Generally, peoples names are *most* dependent on their culture, or their cultural background. This is the *primary* consideration when naming a character. If the character has an Irish background, you want an Irish-sounding name. Ditto for other cultures.

For a character from a fantasy culture, his name should reflect that culture. Normally, people's names have *meanings*, if not in their own tongue, then in some more ancient tongue with which that culture is familiar. If your fantasy culture has a Rome-like feel, names should be Roman. If British, then names should reflect that, as well. Tolkien made up names that had a Norman or Saxon "sound" to them (Romanized with a trailing "o" in many cases so that they would sound masculine to us).

"Terra" means "earth" in Latin, and this is common knowledge. Only use "Terra" if you are attempting to convey some connection with the earth for this character.

My suggestion: fill out the cultural background of all of your characters before naming them.

Reply:Well, I think it would help to know the plot in order to help you with the names. Sometimes the plot may evolve around, for example, and irish kind of theme, and you want your character to have an irish name. Terra's nice, but it also means "earth." If her name isn't symoblic, I wouldn't use Terra.

Reply:Look at Italian names for the chick, they seem to have some nice exotic names, anything that isn't to common will make the story and character seem more interesting, good luck =]
